Grocery Price Index: Aldi wins at $223.86

Cuugo Team · · 2 min read

Aldi takes the lowest full-basket total this week at $223.86, while Coles climbed $2.76 to $235.43 and Woolies dropped $2.70 to $225.36. All four stores have at least one item missing, so no total is directly comparable.

Cuugo Grocery Price Index weekly basket comparison across Aldi, Woolworths, Coles and IGA supermarkets in Australia

Aldi holds the lowest basket total this week at $223.86, with Woolies close behind at $225.36. Coles rose $2.76 to $235.43 and IGA sits at $257.00, a modest $1.15 improvement on last week.

All four stores had at least one item out of stock this week, so the totals can't be compared directly. Coles and Aldi were each missing one item; Woolies two; IGA three. The $198.86 figure is what you'd spend buying each item at whichever store had it cheapest.

The ACCC's supermarket inquiry found earlier this year that Coles and Woolies have "limited incentive" to compete hard on price, and the federal government has since moved to ban price gouging from July 2026. This week's numbers aren't a dramatic illustration of that finding, but Coles creeping up while Woolies fell $2.70 is the kind of weekly drift the Index is designed to track.

Where the per-item gaps are biggest this week

A few lines stand out from this week's pricing:

  • Beef mince swings $4.51, from $6.49 at Aldi to $11.00 at IGA.
  • Dishwasher tablets are $4.00 at Woolies, $11.50 at IGA, a $7.50 gap on a single product.
  • Laundry liquid is $1.99 at Aldi and $6.00 at IGA.
  • Corn flakes cost $2.45 at Coles and $6.90 at IGA.
  • Weet-Bix is the week's oddity: $7.00 at Coles and $15.96 at Aldi, which is unusual. Aldi stocks its own-brand equivalent rather than Sanitarium Weet-Bix, so that's a brand-vs-brand comparison, not like-for-like.
  • Beef sausages range from $3.89 at Aldi to $6.50 at Coles.
  • Greek yoghurt is $3.89 at Aldi versus $7.50 at IGA.

A few items actually favour IGA or Coles this week. Orange juice is cheapest at IGA ($3.15 vs $4.00 at Coles). Potatoes are cheapest at IGA ($5.90 vs $6.50 at Woolies). Shampoo is cheapest at Coles ($2.00) and dearest at Aldi ($5.99), reflecting a brand mix difference rather than a straightforward price gap.

Toothpaste ($1.50 at Coles), plain flour ($1.30 at Coles), long grain rice ($1.80 at Coles), and tea bags ($1.75 at Coles) are all Coles wins this week if you're cherry-picking.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the Cuugo Grocery Price Index basket?

The basket has 15 core staples tracked every Friday across Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and IGA. The full list and methodology live on the Cuugo Grocery Price Index hub page. The same items are priced each week so movements reflect real price changes, not a different product mix.

Why can't I compare the four store totals directly this week?

Each store was missing at least one item from the basket this week. When a store doesn't stock an item, that line is excluded from its total, so the totals don't cover identical sets of products. The $198.86 figure represents the cheapest available price for each item across all stores.
