Cuugo Team · · 2 min read

Aldi priced all 60 basket items at $227.26 this week, the only store to do so. Coles covered 59 items at $231.64, Woolies 58 at $244.10, and IGA 57 at $254.46. Cherry-picking the cheapest price on each line gets the basket to $196.26.

Cuugo Grocery Price Index weekly comparison showing Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and IGA basket totals for 60 staples

Aldi priced every one of the 60 basket items this week and came in at $227.26. No other store stocked the full basket. Coles reached $231.64 across 59 of 60 items (white sugar was out of stock). Woolies reached $244.10 across 58 of 60 items (no baked beans, no muesli). IGA reached $254.46 across 57 of 60 items (no chicken breast fillets, no bacon, no pumpkin).

Because every store's total reflects a different number of items, none of these figures can be compared directly against each other, and none can be compared with last week's totals either. Basket version 2.4 changed how several lines are priced at Coles, Woolies and Aldi, and new lines were added for some stores that weren't priced previously. So this week's figures are a clean starting point for the weeks ahead.

Where the gaps are biggest

A few lines are worth calling out. Beef sausages are $6.50 at Coles and Woolies and $3.89 at Aldi. Navel oranges hit $22.35 for 15 loose pieces at Woolies against $7.49 for a 3 kg bag at Aldi. Chicken breast fillets swing from $9.50 at Coles to $18.80 for two 650 g packs at Woolies. Vanilla ice cream is $4.50 for 2 L at Woolies against $6.50 for 1 L at Coles.

A handful of lines go the other way. Mushrooms are $2.50 at Woolies, cheaper than Aldi's $3.49. Potatoes are $4.00 at Coles, well under Woolies at $6.50. Toothpaste and shampoo are both cheapest at Coles and Woolies. Dishwasher tablets come in lowest at Woolies at $4.00 for 30 tabs.

IGA holds the cheapest price on full cream milk ($3.10), orange juice ($3.10), frozen peas ($2.00) and lemons ($3.45), so it's not a write-off if you're passing one anyway.

The cherry-pick number

If you bought each of the 60 items wherever it was cheapest this week, the total comes to $196.26. That's $31.00 less than Aldi's full-basket price. In practice that means shopping at two or three stores, so whether it's worth it depends on your time and petrol costs. The full item table and methodology show exactly which store wins on each line.

Prices were checked on Friday. Pack sizes vary by store; the Index prices the closest available size to the basket specification and notes the actual pack used in the item table.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the Cuugo Grocery Price Index basket?

The basket holds 60 everyday staples checked every Friday across Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and IGA. It covers fresh produce, meat, dairy, pantry staples, and household items like toilet paper and laundry powder. The full item list, pack sizes and methodology are on the Grocery Price Index hub page.

Why don't all stores have the same total this week?

Coles, Woolworths and IGA each missed at least one basket item this week, white sugar at Coles, baked beans and muesli at Woolworths, and chicken breast fillets, bacon and pumpkin at IGA. Only Aldi stocked all 60 items, so only Aldi's $227.26 is a true full-basket price.
